Homegrown by Heroes- Monier Seed
In May 2015, just 9 days after graduating from Iowa State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Agronomy, Shay Foulk, Mark Monier's son-in-law with Monier Seed and Service, enlisted in the United States Army. After volunteering to sign up, go Infantry, Airborne, and through the Ranger Assesment and Selection Program, Shay was stationed with 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment in Savannah, Georgia- a member of the United States Special Operations Community.
Shay served there for four years with two deployments overseas, and really enjoyed the environment and working with the talented men of the 75th Ranger Regiment. He knew agriculture was his next step, and he and his wife, Hannah (Monier) Foulk, wanted to move home closer to family. Returning to Illinois, Shay jumped into the Monier Seed business and working with his family in Iowa as a consultant at Ag View Solutions (agviewsolutions.com).
Shay has since taken on huge amounts of responsibility within the operation, and is involved in every aspect of Monier Seed- from planting and harvesting, to treating and bagging. Shay draws on military experience for improved efficiency, and utilizes that work ethic to move the operation in the right direction every day.
Shay applied for the Homegrown by Heroes label because he feels it is important to bring awareness to the men and women who return from serving their country and work hard to produce a product to market. "It's not about what I'm doing here at Monier Seed, it's about those throughout the United States who go on to serve their community in other ways as farmers, gardeners, ranchers, and food product distributors" he says. "We need to recognize the incredible sacrifice they and their families made, and work hard to support them in their endeavours that are providing quality products for the American people."
Monier Seed was granted permission to utilize the Homegrown by Heroes label in January 2020, and will proudly display the logo for years to come. What is the logo? "The Homegrown By Heroes (HBH) label is the official farmer veteran branding program of America. The label serves to inform consumers that agricultural products donning the logo were produced by U.S. military veterans. Additionally, farms and agricultural businesses displaying the logo denotes a Homegrown By Heroes-certified operation."
Shay continues to serve in the Illinois National Guard, which he says is a great fit for the farm and the family. "Military service comes with risks and sacrifices, but I am proud to have served and continue to serve. The military also has a lot to offer young families and farmers looking to support their income, learn skills, provide for their children, and cover their healthcare."
We hope you consider supporting Monier Seed by buying our quality products and experiencing our small-business service, all while supporting products that are truly Homegrown by Heroes.
